The design team and I are interested in the contrasting ideas between the beautiful and the ugly. The cabaret, of course, is beautiful. Right outside is the ugly stuff, like the social and political climate.
Our lighting journey begins in the Klub, I'll be using saturated colors, sharp textures, and slightly lower angles to create the colorful, indulgent atmosphere of the Kit Kat Klub. A mix of contrasting and complimentary colors will give each musical number in the Klub it's own distinct feel.
Our play takes us to many locations, from railcars to bedrooms and dressing rooms. In general, I will treat these places in a realistic way that becomes heightened by introducing color during musical numbers like the pineapple song.
While the Klub may begin full of color and vibrancy, there reaching a point where the realities of the outside world can no longer be denied. All the glamour is striped away in the final moments of the show as we are reminded of what happens when too many of us make the same choice as Sally.
