Ride the Cyclone is a great reminder that as we navigate unknowns and encounter tragedy, such as dying in a roller coaster accident, there is humor, human connection, and the hope of a second chance to get us through.
In designing sets and lights, we began by pulling inspiration from carnivals, amusement parks, vintage circuses, and modern pop shows. I came up with two rings to evoke the shape of a roller coaster loop de loop; behind the main drape is "life on Earth". This curtain parts to reveal a muslin screen we project shadows. These shadows are the memories, fantasies, and the realities that are no longer within reach.
The role of the lighting design was to be incredibly high energy; including exposed truss and stagehand movement to create a touring show feel. The musical range of the show goes from power rock ballads to operatic arias as each character sings about there life on earth. Ultimately, our heroes learn that in death there is nothing else to do: they have thoroughly enjoyed the "ride".
