Artist Statement
An ordinary life is profoundly layered. The team looked to Norman Rockwell's The Four Freedoms and Edward Hopper as depictions of the warm and fuzzy Americana. These paintings also hinting at something brewing underneath- a sense of forlornness and disillusionment.
To support our story arch, I aimed for naturalistic lighting of a warm, bright day; a day like any other inhabited by a family like any other. The inclusion of a prominent tree texture fleshes out the world of the neighborhood but also serves as a constant reminder of Larry's fallen memorial.
As the truth bubbles to the surface and can no longer be denied, I leaned into Hopper's clear sense of direction of light during key moments such as Chris reading the letter, speaking to that sense of forlorness.
